Freelance Writers: Jumpstarting Your Creativity Before Writing

REALITY ONE: Writing is a job, and should be treated like one. It’s one thing to write occasionally, or in your spare time while leisurely staring out the window. But the job of the professional writer, is to write. Just as the job of the teacher is to teach. The only way to build a volume of material – be it articles, or poems, or short stories or whatever you wish to work on – the only way to create material is to dedicate yourself to putting words on the page. The only way your novel will get finished is if you put words on the page. Every day. You put words on the page every day just as the nurse goes to work every day.

I’m not prepared to say this is true because I know that publishers, magazines and newspapers all hire copy editors for one very good reason. Not every writer on the team has good spelling skills. No writer’s punctuation skills are perfect. And everyone has certain words they almost always type incorrectly. I’ve been a copy editor. It’s always easier to see others mistakes.

The truth is that this first idea, no matter how exciting it may seem, usually cannot sustain the storyline of a novel of say, 80,000 words on its own. It will need fortifying with many other ideas. This is where the carefully worked out plot outline comes into its own. It not only shows up weakness in the plot but also may present fresh ideas and plot situations. The writer can see where the idea or situation is taking him and can take measures to strengthen any weakness in the plot with new material, that is, new ideas and situations.

These are important questions to ask yourself. So is, why do you want to be a writer? The more you can define your goals, the eaiser it will be to form a step by step path to reach those goals. It circles back to treating writing as an occupation.

Parents should make their children that much capable that they do not find any difficulty to adapt recent technologies and varying climates be it social, political or physical. This way the children become responsible members of the society and build the sense to contribute a lot to the society.
